   Coping With ISO 9001:2000
Much criticism has been attached to the current international Quality Systems Standard 1SO 9000 and, in particular, its impact on small businesses. Emphasis on the requirement for demonstrated 'compliance to standard' for suppliers to large public and private sole purchasers has forced small businesses in many sectors, particularly manufacturing ones, to seek registration to the standard, in order to get onto, or remain on, approved supplier lists. Moreover, the standard was not initially designed for small businesses and has often legitimately been criticised for the added control of operation that it may imply for small enterprises. They, however, are often associated with poorly designed implementation of Quality Management Systems.

   Executive Summary 2000 ISO 9000
The ISO 9000 standards are a set of international quality management standards and guidelines. Since their initial publication in 1987, they have earned a global reputation as the basis for establishing quality management systems.

Three of the current standards, ISO 9001, 9002 and 9003, have been used extensively as the basis for independent (third party) quality system certification. This has resulted in the certification of around 300,000 organizations worldwide, with many more in the process of setting up and implementing quality management systems.

ISO 9000-3 and Compliance Risks for Organisations
After reviewing the numerous pitfalls surrounding compliance with ISO 9000-3, some may rightly ask whether certification is worth the effort. Proponents of the standard point to benefits such as raising productivity, reducing costs, providing consistent quality, improving competitiveness and corporate image, and perhaps valued most of all: increasing recognition and approval among customers. As with most choices in business, deciding if compliance is right for an organization should be taken from a cost-benefit perspective. One of the keys to such analysis is being aware of all of the hidden costs and risks. Such risks lie within the specification itself as well as its implementation by individuals lacking experience and/or valuing literal conformance over the true intention of the standard: increased effectiveness of an organization to produce quality software. The answer to the compliance question remains to be answered by individual organizations and preferably by informed management.

ISO 9001 and Management Standards Product Design
ISO 9000 has recently emerged as an important quality management system standard. The ISO 9001 version of this standard contains important provisions affecting the management of product design. However, ISO 9001 is not alone. It is part of a much broader movement toward the application of standards for management systems. This paper explores how the design-related provisions of ISO 9001 are related to this broader movement. The results strongly suggest that most product design managers will have externally audited, formally planned management systems in their future.
